Awkward Odors

Filed under: Singapore - katlinson @ 3:09 pm

As beautiful and clean a country Singapore is, it smells weird almost everywhere you go. I’m sitting here in class (yeah I know, I should be paying attention), and I’m trying to take the least amount of breaths as possible. It’s weird, the majority of people here smell awful. Right now, the guy next to me smells like the ball pit in Chuck E. Cheeses. Seriously like sweaty feet. Don’t get me started on the buses. There’s a certain group of people, and I won’t say who, that smells like B.O. times 10. Me and a few of the other UC kids have noticed that it’s a freaking challenge to find a stick of deodorant in the stores, but the fronts of every store is super stocked with condoms. Haha… that might explain the bad odors. And when you finally do find one, it’s like S$10/stick. That’s still like 7 U.S. dollars. Amazing.

You know what also smells horrible? Durian. I swear they worship the damn fruit here. They even designed a building after it. But, it’s illegal to bring on trains and buses because of the smell. WTF?

Disclaimer- This entry is not meant to offend anyone, and if it does offend you… smell yourself haha jk.

Okay, I just needed to share that. Anyway, tonight is ladies’ night. Free entry to the clubs and bars, and ALL you can drink. That’s right… all the alcohol you can possibly dream of. I might have to pass tonight, it’s not too fun going to class Thursday morning with a hangover.

On a random note: God I miss hole in the wall Mexican food.

As I was sitting alone on a bench eating my sack lunch… I see this:

Haha pretty sad huh?

Okay, until next time… Peace out.

First Post in Singapore

Filed under: Singapore - katlinson @ 3:42 am

So, I really thought I would be posting a blog everyday. Haven’t really had much time to do so, but I’ll try my best to write about the highlights.

I’m here in Singapore. It’s crazy, I can’t believe I actually went through with it. It’s all starting to set in that I’m not going home for a while. It all really hit me once I got on the plane.

It’s been about three weeks now. So many things have happened and I’ve met a lot of really cool people. So many stories and adventures… so here’s a short recap.

The plane ride was long, almost 19 hours. The two girls next to me, mother and daughter were nice to talk to, except I was kind of weirded out at one point. I woke up from a nap and the 16 year old girl next to me was sleeping with her head on my lap! I didn’t know what to do with her head so I left it on my lap. Talk about awkward. Anyway, we stopped over in Taipei and finally got to Singapore. Singapore is super humid, but damn it’s nice here.

The first few days were just orientation, picking classes, and meeting the other 50 UC kids who are awesome. We’ve done so much- shop, eat, bird park, zoos, museums, eat, shop, clubs, bars, eat, tour the country, night safari, and did I mention eat? This whole country is seriously made up of malls and restaurants. The food here is pretty cheap and tasty.

Even though I’ve been having a great time, I’ve also had my share of bad luck here. As many of you know, I just got the new black Nikon S6. Left it in a taxi =( The same day we go to the bird park right? First bird I visit pecks the hell out of my hand. I’m lucky the stupid thing didn’t bite my hand off. He was pretty pissed that I leaned on a fence. The same trip… out of 51 kids, I happen to be the only one who gets SHITTED on. Yay. If I wasn’t wearing sunglasses, I woud have had poopy eye. Maybe it’s because I’m the only left handed student of the 51… who knows?

EAP Singapore Fall'06

We’ve been to many museums, but ONE story stands out. At one museum, there were many statues and real people pretending to be statues. Anyway, one of the girls from San Diego, Anna stopped by one of the statues (which happened to be a fat one) and she said, "WHOAA this one’s HUUUGE!" Of course, he was real and turned around and said, "HI…" hahahaha Anna ran away sooo embarassed. That had to be the highlight of my day!

On this trip I have also come to find that people here have a different sense of humor. I learned that the hard way. Let me explain. Well, me and a few of the girls went to get pedicures in Bugis Village. The nail salon we went to was filled with girls except for one guy who was visiting his friends who worked there. We were sitting on elevated chairs with our feet in the tub. When I was done, I tried to stand up but I had a skirt on. So I asked one of the workers to help me as I covered my panties. As I was getting up, I joked with the guy and said, "Don’t peeek!" Joke right? He didn’t think so. The guy went crazy on me. He started cussin and yelling in Mandarin. My friend Alva understood and told me he was pissed, which I could see. She said he was mad because he thought I was accusing him of looking up my skirt. Haha wow. She tried to explain to him but he wouldn’t give. It was funny but I felt kind of bad. Before we left I said sorry again but he just brushed me off and said, "I understand… %^&^&(*! Haha whatever that meant.

Besides that, everything else is going just great. I got sick because of the lack of sleep and overpartying, but I’m starting to kick back and get into school mode. Finally saw my cousins on Saturday and spent the day with them.

Okay, for your viewing pleasure, check out my pictures at Fotki!

Anyway, I’ll update more of my adventures later. Ciao.
